MadPads
are the most versatile, totally portable practice pads available. It's
designed as serious practice equipment with the serious player in mind.
By addressing three important aspects of practice pad design, we created a model that enhances the overall versatility of the basic practice pad. These three aspects are:
With the goal of enhancing conventional design, and at the same time, being careful to maintain the highest level of quality, MadPadz Percussion Products created the "MadPad" — A truly versatile practice pad!
The MadPad is a rubber surface type pad, as opposed to the drum head type pads. The use of the rubber surface is for reduction in volume, providing much quieter practicing than the drum head type surface. Understanding that, two important playing characteristics for any pad are:
The
MadPad playing surface is a circular pad, measuring 5 1/2" in diameter.
Many pad manufacturers follow an established trend with their smaller
pad by producing what they call a 6" diameter. Our dimension yields
virtually the same playing area as these other products, especially
where the drum head style pad is concerned. This style needs a rim to
hold the head down firmly in place. The area, just inside the rim, referred
to as the bearing edge, has an unplayable area that is about 1/4" on
both sides, and when taken into account, reduces the playing area by
1/2", resulting in a 5 1'2" playing area. This is the same size as the
MadPad. However, we intentionally produce this diameter, providing the
same playing area, and allowing a reduction in the overall size.
The MadPad utilizes a 1/4" thick rubber pad with a durometer of 35 (durometer is the term for measuring hardness in rubber products). This hardness level has proven to be the most desirable, and ultimately the most commonly used. The density of the polycarbonate plastic helps to provide a firm base, resulting in a stable, solid feel, with a rebound that is very much like playing on a drum. Although the rubber pad and polycarbonate body do provide a reasonable amount of weight, the goal of ultimate portability has kept the MadPad on the lighter side. Playing on a flat surface results in a degree of bounce, however the velcro feet have been incorporated to overcome this drawback. By maintaining the size of the playing surface with the innovative body design, and utilizing the the commonly desired rubber pad properties, the MadPad plays beautifully, and provides the solid feel that drummers want.

Introducing
the "School Pack"Jamie Friedman, inventor of the MadPad, describes the features of this innovative approach for percussion class instruction. He has been a Middle School band director for 23 years in Westchester, NY.
After many years of teaching percussion classes I became frustrated with what was available for use in group settings. Although there are a number of good practice pads available, there was nothing that was simple to use as far as set-up or storage was concerned. After developing the MadPad, I started using it in both, lesson groups and band rehearsals. It is the most efficient, easy to use piece of percussion equipment I have used in all my years of teaching. Quite frankly, I don't know how I got by without it.
I
realized that when I used the pads in class, the students always used
them strapped to their legs. Only occasionally would I use the Velcro
pegs, when I wanted to mount the pad to flat surface for demonstration
purposes. Directors who wanted to purchase a number of pads would not
need, or want, the extra packaging and assorted pegs that came in the
individually packaged pads sold in stores.
The
School Pack is a more cost effective, pre-packaged lot of MadPads which
comes in a sturdy plastic storage container. It includes 8 pads of assorted colors, 10 straps (2 for replacements) and 2 sets of Velcro pegs if the instructors has need for them. All the items come pre-packaged in the plastic container which is convenient for storage and transport. No need to gather a bunch of loose pads and stands in your arms.
When we start our percussion class, a student will grab the storage box and bring it to where the lesson is taking place. Students take the pads out and strap them to their legs, using the straps that have been left attached to the pads from previous use. After the lesson, students remove the pads, keep the straps on, and toss the pads back in the box. The lid snaps securely in place, and the box is returned to its storage area till next use.
Players of all levels are taking advantage of the versatility of the MadPad. We have many satisfied customers, and the list keeps growing. Here's just some of the comments people have made.
